Reverend Wanda L. Sawyer
Wanda L. Sawyer had a passion for serving others long before God called her to serve Him. She graduated high school with an unselfish vision of becoming a Physical Education teacher, but as fate and the economy would have it, her career began in the business world. After working for Bell Telephone, Westinghouse and United Parcel Service and earning a degree in Business Administration along with certificates in computer science, her passion for teaching was still unfulfilled.
In 1983, Reverend Sawyer surrendered to the will of God and accepted her call to teach and preach the word of God. Her previous church appointments include: 11 years as Pastor of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Charleroi, PA, 2 years as Assistant to the Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. William H. Curtis, Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Pittsburgh PA and currently, Senior Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Rankin, PA, which during her 3-year tenure grew from a membership of 95 to well over 700 members with 19 active ministries.
Wanda L. Sawyer is a dynamic, committed woman of God with an abundance of love and compassion for people. Her accomplishments include serving as the first woman elected as Vice-Moderator of the Allegheny Union Baptist Association in its forty-nine year history, founder of “Bridging the Gap” an after-school mentoring program for children and adults, Chaplain for Homewood YMCA and Auditor for PA Baptist State Convention. Board appointments include the Governor’s Task Force for Health Disparities, Children’s Hospital Advisory Board, Carlow University Interfaith Ministry Board, UPMC, Braddock Community Health Initiative, Sojourner House, Centers for Healthy Hearts and Souls, southwestern PA AIDS Planning Coalition and attended Geneva College Center for Urban Biblical Ministry, just to name a few.
Reverend Sawyer is an active member of the Rankin community, NAACP and most recently launched the Nehemiah Emmanuel Community Development Corporation, Paul & Silas Prison Reintegration program. Her vision, similar to Nehemiah’s vision in the New Testament, is to rebuild the community.
Reverend Wanda Sawyer is a born leader and is known throughout western Pennsylvania as a woman with a vision and a teacher of mankind.
